Your Brain is Only the Tip of the Iceberg: Lead With Your Body in Mind

In a word, as your eyes meet this page, how do you feel? Where do you feel that sensation in your body? If that part of your body could speak, what would it say?

I’ve just given you a small taste of somatics. When I talk about somatics, I’m largely met with curiosity. People want to know what it is. When I tell them, I often hear, “That sounds interesting.”

Somatics is interesting. It’s a whole-person approach to helping people access all aspects of their intelligence (intellectual, emotional, and physical) to get unstuck and move ahead with confidence.

Somatics is not a linear path. Somatic intelligence lives below the eyebrows and is a moment-by-moment process that is fluid, continuous, and ever-changing, much like our world today. The problem is, most of us live in our heads much of the time. The more we live in our heads the more we lose touch with our bodies and how our actions affect others.

Take Clare for example. Clare was having difficulty communicating and building trust with her team. Once she started attending to her sensations she noticed that she felt more confident and had increased options for the way she communicated with her team and others. Consequently, her manager, team, and colleagues all observed a positive increase in Clare’s communication skills and higher levels of trust.

Like Clare, the more we attend to our sensations, the more present we are, and the more choices we have. Sensations are interlinked with our thinking, acting, feeling, sensing, perception, and emotions that create the narrative of our lives. To have a fulfilling and satisfying personal and professional life story it’s important to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and skillful action. This is not a job for the mind alone. It takes a whole-person approach to bring balance to our doing and remind us that we are co-creators in the forming and shaping of our lives.

We don’t have to be a casualty to change. Moving beyond just cognitive insight into new actions and behaviors by engaging the body awakens confidence, curiosity and opens up a world of possibilities.
