I don’t know about you, but there are days when the words, “this too shall pass,” and the message of hope and thanksgiving they hold for me get me through the day.
I know I’m not alone. I recently spoke with an exacerbated leader who opened up about the sheer weight of organizational change riding on his shoulders. After acknowledging what he was feeling, pausing for a deep breath, he ended his story with “this too shall pass.”
A year ago, at this time, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and “this too shall pass” became my daily mantra.
Whether it’s a personal health crisis, professional upheaval, the weight of leading in unprecedented times, or just the day-to-day grind of being alive some days, it too shall pass; but, we don’t know when. We want a watch when what we have is a compass.
A watch tells us what to expect when. A compass indicates direction and is an essential instrument for navigation. We all have an internal compass to offset the intensity of modern life; it’s called somatic awareness.
In the most basic sense of the word, somatic awareness is awareness of the body’s internal state. It helps us understand important messages from within our bodies – such as when we need to eat or when we need to pause and reorient ourselves to deliver the best results.
Historically, IQ was the all-important number. Life was simpler then. Then came EQ. Today, somatic awareness is gaining recognition as a new form of intelligence to cope with the complexities of modern times.
The Body Keeps Score
People change based on how they feel. Therefore, the changes that happen within us are of no comparison to changes that occur around us. We are stronger and more adaptable than we think.
The clients I have taught to heed the important messages coming from their bodies learn to stop resisting change, calm their nervous system, and open up into productive states of curiosity and self-reflection that help them find their way when they’re feeling lost.
